List the places to watch, the detail you need and how long you need recordings. Then compare the cable routes, power and equipment needed to capture those views.
Mark entrances, the cash desk, loading docks, gates and high-value inventory on a simple drawing. For each position, say whether you need an overview or closer detail of a person, item or transaction.
A wide view of the yard and a close view of the gate may need different positions and lenses. Check both views instead of choosing a camera count first.
Note the possible Ethernet route and its length. PoE carries power and data over compatible Ethernet equipment; battery or solar options need a charging plan as well as a suitable network connection.
A PTZ camera can inspect different directions, but it cannot keep every direction in view at once. Use a fixed view where a continuous record of one area matters.
Compare power and connection optionsFor each view, choose continuous, scheduled or event recording and a retention target. Include who needs live access and who will retrieve or export clips.
Check scene detail and lens coverage before deciding whether 4K is needed. Estimate storage from the intended bitrate and recording hours, then check the recorder’s drive and channel limits.
Estimate recording capacitySet a budget for the cameras, recorder, drives, cables, mounts and installation. Include battery visits, storage checks and any connection or subscription costs that apply.
Record the purchase timeline and planned additions. Check a recording and an exported clip from each important position before accepting the installation.

Include the property type and location, a drawing or list of viewing positions, the detail needed at each position, possible cable routes, recording schedule and days, budget and timeline. Add any existing camera or recorder model numbers and planned expansion.
